Description
The fringe is the contemporary “in-between” city, where urban and periurban features interweave. In European cities, this transitional area often matches with Post World War II urban expansions. Nowadays, the fringe, generally in decline, offers huge chances for regeneration. For this purpose, innovative planning tools are required, tools that are more flexible and adaptive than traditional blueprint-based ones. The book collects the outcomes of research on innovative planning modes for the fringe, carried out in various European cities within the framework of the research network “Suburban – Reinventing the fringe.”
