Description

The rediscovery of cycling in recent years has been promoted, especially in Northern Europe, through a multitude of associations and cycling advocacy campaigns. Experiences such as, the London Cycling Campaign, the Cycling Embassy of Denmark, the Cities fit for Cyclists, and the Bicycle Friendly Cities index, already adopted by more than 130 cities worldwide, represent in their heterogeneity a renewed demand of infrastructures for human-scale mobility. This brings out a concept of dynamic public space, which is also capable of innovating the use of space (of cycling) as an ordering and qualifying element of new urban places (of proximity) according to the concept of “City of 15 minutes”, where all residents can walk or bike to all the services they need.
From this perspective, the challenges related to the development of Bicycle Infrascapes intertwine the concept of walkability and cyclability and how we can think and design new inclusive habitats in the city of the future. The integrated enjoyment of resilient bicycle networks capable of accommodating a wider range of services concerns a type of approach that replaces the “destination” with the “route,” promoting also territorial linkages and urban-rural interfaces.
