Description

The monograph is dedicated to the work of Kengo Kuma. After graduating in Architecture from the University of Tokyo in 1979, he worked for a period at Nihon Sekkei and Toda Corporation. He then moved to New York for further studies at Columbia University from 1985 to 1986. In 1987, Kuma returned to Japan and founded the Spatial Design Studio, and in 1990 founded his own company, Kengo Kuma & Associates. He has taught at Columbia University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and at Keio University, where in 2008 he earned a Ph.D. in architecture. As a professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Architecture, he has conducted a number of research projects in architecture, urban planning, and design within his laboratory, the Kuma Lab. Today, Kengo Kuma & Associates employs over 150 architects in Tokyo and Paris, and engages in projects of different types and sizes around the world. Kuma’s stated goal is to recover the tradition of Japanese buildings and reinterpret these traditions for the 21st century.
